Message from the Dean

In the Name of Allah SWT, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful.

First and foremost, I would like to thank the management of the University as well as TISSA-UUM staff members for their trust in me to lead Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA-UUM) commencing January 1, 2019. I humbly accept this responsibility and I am committed to propel the School to a greater height, in line with the School aim to be amongst the top accounting schools in the world. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the former Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Chek Derashid for his leadership.

The School proudly offers two (2) programmes at undergraduate level [Bachelor of Accounting and the Bachelor of Accounting (Information System)] and three (3) programmes at postgraduate level [Masters Science (International Accounting), Masters of Accountancy (by research) and doctoral study. At present, TISSA-UUM houses around 1,600 students with about 81% (1,300 students) are pursuing their undergraduate programmes. Out of 1,600, 975 students (75%) enrol in Bachelor of Accounting programme. As for postgraduate students, around 60% (180) are currently pursuing their Masters degrees while the remaining are doctorate students. Apart from having local students, TISSA-UUM receives international students that contributes approximately around 10% of our total active students. Since its establishment in 1984 (Bachelor of Accounting) and 1999 (Bachelor of Accounting (Information System) respectively, our undergraduate programs are fully accredited by Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). The programmes are also recognised by professional accounting bodies (MICPA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA (Australia), and ICAEW) for our students to obtain maximum exemptions while pursuing their professional certification.

The execution of academic programs at TISSA-UUM is espoused by over 100 qualified academic staff spreading across five (5) major accounting domains; Financial Accounting, Accounting Information System, Taxation, Management Accounting and Auditing. With the strength of academic faculty and a significant number of active students, TISSA-UUM is known as among the largest accounting education providers in the world.

In tandem with the School’s mission to enhance scholarship and knowledge in the field of accounting, the School has set up the Institute for Strategic & Sustainable Accounting Development (ISSAD) as its School Centre of Excellence (SCOE). The Institute has considerable role in promoting research, consultancy and publication initiatives among the staff members. ISSAD’s core concern is to cultivate practical and relevant research that potentially address contemporary accounting issues encountered by businesses, public organisations, regulatory bodies, and policy-makers. Specifically, ISSAD gives a particular emphasis on the research and consultancy in the area of financial reporting, strategic management accounting and corporate sustainability strategies. With the aim to encourage dissemination of knowledge amongst accounting scholars, the Institute also organises/co-organises annual seminars and conferences on accounting-related issues. To undertake its objectives, ISSAD receives support from three (3) Research Units (RU), which focus on research in the area of Auditing & Corporate Governance, Taxation and Accounting Information System.

To remain relevant and sustainable as the accounting education provider, the academic institutions needs to constantly collaborate with the industry players and related institutions. With this respect, TISSA-UUM has been engaging public figures, alumni, industries, academic institutions as well as government agencies. These stakeholders support the School’s progress and excellence via curriculum design as well as by providing professional discourse series to academic staff and students. Such collaboration is anticipated to strengthen staff competency as well as to improve students’ knowledge and professionalism. To date, the School has sealed official collaboration through MOU/MOA with Yayasan Muhibah Tan Sri Fng Ah Seng, Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) and Ahmadubello University, Nigeria. TISSA-UUM also has signed MOU with several reputable professional accounting bodies, both locally and internationally. These include Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Institute of Chartered of Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Having the programmes accredited by international organisations would further uplift the reputation of the School. Hence, we are proud of our current achievement of becoming among the top 200 in the World QS Ranking (Accounting and Finance Subject) since 2015. TISSA-UUM is also one of the Schools under College of Business (COB), UUM being accredited by a prestigious accreditation body - Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) with effective August 2016.
