In the early stage as a student, you have to learn to make some adjustments. Life you are about to begin in campus could be slightly different from the life you have had before university. With a new environment, lifestyle, people around you, cultures- you, most probably need to learn and make some adjustments, especially during your first year of study. In order to succeed, you need good self-discipline, commitment, diligence and strategies to survive in campus life.
There are challenges and obstacles lurking around in the university, but if you are positive in any aspect, you may overcome the challenges. To be successful you have to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Be enthusiastic and always think positive that whatever you do is for your own benefit! You need to prepare and manage yourself in term of time, study and daily activities. Your life in campus should be balanced and managed in a more comprehensive way compared to what you have done before university. Eat a healthy diet, exercise frequently, mix well with your friends and lecturers, plan your study, be energetic and disciplined as well as try to figure out the best way to study based on your preferences and personality. Every student knows that there will always be examinations at the end of every semester which they have to excel in. So it is important for them to prepare for the exams- through for instance, setting up a study group, honing their study skills and seeking for lecturers' help, if necessary. Knowing some strategies on how to answer exam questions will also help you a lot!
Be a resourceful person by searching for information from a variety of books, journals, articles, the internet and other relevant sources. You should also have good general knowledge. Be forward looking and always remember that time is very precious. Don't waste it by doing unbeneficial activities such as loitering, chatting, watching movies and other things that do not contribute to your studies. However, it is also not healthy to study around the clock . You need a time-off as well to relieve tensions from studying. YOU SHOULD GIVE YOUR BEST SHOT IN WHATEVER YOU DO IN ORDER TO SUCCEED IN YOUR CAMPUS LIFE!
Having excellent soft skills is something that students should strive for. Try to acquire those skills as much as you can. To have a meaningful life in campus you need to expose yourself to a variety of activities, not only attending lectures - you need to get involved in social activities organized by student’s clubs or student’s representatives. UUM provides various opportunities for students to get involved in activities in the campus. Participating in these kind of activities will make you more competitive as it builds up your leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Students should grab the opportunities to develop themselves as 'first-class minded' or 'versatile' students. It will strengthen your confidence which is vital to produce effective public leaders. In UUM there more than 90 student organizations and programs that provide students with additional opportunities to serve the public.
Use the facilities around you – for instance the sports complex, which is equipped with an archery field, equestrian area, a go-kart centre and even several golf courses. Getting involved in sports and physical activities makes you healthy and fit.
Some of you need guidance and a bit of self-exploration. You also need to acquire skills in problem-solving and decision making. Self-help and guidance during the study is critical to certain students. Some of you need academic guidance and counselling, motivation, and career counselling. You may get to know yourself by doing a self-assessment – career inventories and worksheets to assess your motivation, interest and talents. We provide these kinds of services that may help you enjoy your life in campus!
